Het eerste Franse surfkledingmerk werd in 1985 in Normandië opgericht. Het woord OXBOW, wat in het vroege Amerikaans-Engels een ‘boogvormige bocht in een rivier’ betekent, werd door de oprichters van het merk, Fabrice Valéri en Isabelle Cachot, gekozen uit termen die op een kaart van de Verenigde Staten te vinden zijn. Ze waren onmiddellijk overtuigd door de twee lettergrepen, de fonetiek en het grafische potentieel. De jonge ondernemers maakten er een gewoonte van om inspiratie en namen voor hun collecties te halen uit vintage kaarten die de wens om te reizen opwekken.
Sinds de jaren 90 is Oxbow uitgegroeid tot een iconisch merk met herkenbare graphics.
